Cattle Parentage

Why identify Parentage?

Genomically identify sires and dams in order to make effective decisions about progeny, breed programs and bull selection.

Key uses for parentage:

  • Assign pedigree and reduce error associated with traditional mothering up methods

  • Target bull performance

  • Find more/less dominant sires

  • Identify sires potentially contributing to calf loss e.g. calving difficulties or genetic abnormalities

  • Identify sires of desirable progeny

  • Confirm the parentage of accelerated reproductive programs (i.e. embryo transfer and AI calves)

  • Increase the accuracy of estimated breeding values
